About The Mansion
 The  Meriwether  Mansion

Built by Minor and Elizabeth Meriwether in late 1800 in what was then the most fashionable neighborhood in the city of Saint Louis.

Minor Meriwether, a descendant of Meriwether Lewis, the explorer, and his wife Elizabeth Avery moved to Saint Louis from Memphis, Tennessee.

Elizabeth Avery Meriwether, a personal friend of Susan B. anthony, was a leader in the women's suffrage movement. She was the first woman to cast a vote in the state of Tennessee, and that state has recently honored her memory with a lifesize bronze erected in Market Square Mall in Knoxville, TN.

The once elegant mansion fell abandoned and in disrepair in modern times. It was threatened with demolition in 2004. The current owners, from Houston, TX, purchased the dilapidated structure in 2005 and undertook a meticulous and expansive restoration lasted four years.

The historic integrity of the structure was carefully preserved. Existing architectural elements were restored and reutilized where possible. Exact custom fabricated replicas were utilized where architectural elements were missing or irreparably deteriorated.Although the restoration preserved the historic integrity of the structure, the technical solutions adopted provide for the most advanced level of comfort. The gut-rehab of the Mansion has provided all new windows, doors, electrical, plumbing and mechanical.

The lot next door at 3722 Grandel square, was once occupied by a similar structure that was lost to demolition in the 70's. The lot, elegantly landscaped and enclosed by imported Venetian wrought iron fence and exquisite gates, has now been annexed to the Meriwether Mansion. The resulting park like setting is currently being used for special events with tents and gazebos erected on occasions.
